What if I told you we managed to squeeze a week's worth of cleans into a single day? It wasn’t magic, it was systems. Let me break it down for you.

Growing a cleaning business (or any business) is a lot of work. Brick by brick, the business grows. Nothing is an over-night success. Each day you’re doing the basics to make your business grow and keep your clients & cleaners happy.

Our story is no different and it’s still being written.

Building the Base with Daily Habits

A few months back, I read a great quote by a controversial business influencer ⬇️

When I read this post, I knew I had to change. I’ve always had that entrepreneurial spark—firing on all cylinders one week, then cooling off the next. Sound familiar? I get really excited about something for a few days, and then it fades. Here, Nick is saying that approach doesn’t work. He’s right.

So instead, I changed my approach:

  • 10 cold DMs a day

  • Scheduling two weeks in advance

  • Hiring, always hiring

10 Cold DMs a day - every day

Instead of doing 100 cold DMs in one day and then getting burnt out like Nick warned about, I changed. I would do 10 cold DMs per day for as long as I could. I still do it today.

Often, it’s cold DMs on Facebook when I see someone has posted their new Airbnb. And sometimes it’s a cold email or cold call to a property management firm. Whatever the approach, I make sure that I can be consistent and do it over a long period of time.

The choice to do something consistently to drive the business forward will do much more for you than small bursts of energy. It’s the difference between starting a campfire using lighter fluid vs kindling. Lighter fluid is amazing for about 5 seconds but that fire quickly goes out if there isn’t anything to fuel it.

Scheduling two weeks in advance

To ensure we stay on top of the growth we’re experiencing, we schedule all of our cleans 2 weeks in advance. In fact, part of our manger’s compensation is based on it.

During onboarding, we require each host to provide their Airbnb / VRBO iCal link and we plug it into Breezeway. This lets us see bookings clear out into the future and assign cleans ahead of time. This allows us to build in hiring and flexibility for last-minute changes.

If we get last-minute bookings, not a problem because we have planned for it. If we have too many cleans and not enough cleaners, no problem. We’ve got two weeks to hire more. This system has been life saving for us.

If you are intentionally trying to grow your business, you have to plan for it. Put the processes and systems in place to be able to grow. When your daily habits start working and more clients than you can handle start pouring in, you’ll be able to thrive because of the systems you’ve put in place.

Hiring, Always Hiring

I’ve had an indeed listing active for the past two years. Each week, we get several candidates who apply for our cleaning positions. Of course, we probably interview only 5 per week and hire only 1. This, just like the 10 cold DMs each day, is crucial to sustain our growth.

If we continuously bring on new clients and new properties but don’t hire new cleaners, we’ll soon get into trouble. You can’t infinitely grow your number of clients without also growing the number of cleaners.

When we do interview and bring on new cleaners, our process is simple:

Video call → Reference check → Test Cleans → Background check → Proof of Insurance

Here’s the point

If you are actively trying to grow your business, you have to act like it by doing the small daily tasks to get you there. For me that’s cold DMs, interviewing new cleaners, and scheduling our cleans 2 weeks in advance.

If you do these things (or similar) each day, you shouldn’t be surprised when you have more cleans than you can handle and it feels like you’re busting at the seams.

Until next time,

Logan
