What to do when guests won't leave

“Hi (host), guests are still at the property. Was a late check-out approved?”
Sound familiar? As an Airbnb cleaner, starting on time isn’t just important—it’s critical. Especially on those same-day turns, a late start can send your schedule into a tailspin. And when guests overstay their welcome, it can make your blood pressure spike faster than your morning coffee ☕️
Late check-outs can derail your whole day. As the cleaner, it’s your job to protect your most valuable asset: your time ⌛️
Setting the Stage
Before you kick off a new relationship with a host, it's essential to lay down the law. Sure, it might feel awkward at first, but setting expectations and negotiating terms upfront will save you a world of headaches later. Don’t wait until you’re knee-deep in problems to lay out your standards on late check-outs and delayed starts.
And remember, never ambush a host with surprise charges. Transparency is key. Think about it—ever taken your car in for a simple fix and walked out with a bill that made you question your life choices? Yeah, not fun.

If you need to adjust your fee for any reason (late start, pet fur explosion, extra mess, etc.), make sure you communicate before the bill lands in their inbox.
Check-in and Check-out Drill
At our cleaning company, we ask for a check-out time of 10 AM and a check-in at 4 PM. That sweet 6-hour window lets us clean, do a quality check, and tackle any curveballs that come our way (because they always do).
Most hosts are cool with flexible check-in/check-out times. But if you’re dealing with a stickler, ensure you can get the job done within their specified window.
Delayed Starts Drama
We give a 15-minute grace period before we start charging our hourly rate for guests lingering past their check-out time. If they’re out by 10:15, no sweat. But if they're still there at 10:30, 10:45, 11:00… we start the meter at 10:15.
Why? Because your cleaner is already on-site, waiting. They deserve to be compensated for their time, and if it’s a same-day turn or there's another clean lined up, a delayed departure can mess up the whole day.
Pro Tip
Be upfront about your policies when you give your quote. It’ll save you tons of heartache later. If a host balks at your policies, you can hash out a compromise that works for both sides before the first clean.
Until next time,
Logan
